PRACTICAL TECH NOTES

Choosing a phone charger or cable

A quick way to check the details that matter before you buy, without guessing from the connector or wattage alone.

General buying guidance · Sources checked 30 September 2026

USB-C describes a connector shape; it does not, by itself, tell you whether a particular phone, cable and adapter will deliver the charging speed you want. Check the phone maker’s instructions for your exact model first.

01

Start with the exact phone model

Find the full model name in your phone’s settings or on its original packaging. Look up its official charging specifications, including the supported cable connection, charging standard and maximum supported input. Similar-looking phones can have different requirements.

For example, Google’s current Pixel guidance lists compatible cable and adapter types and notes that charging speed can change with the accessory used. Treat that as Pixel-specific guidance, not a specification for every Android phone.

02

Check the adapter and cable together

  • Connector: check both ends of the cable and the port on your phone and adapter.
  • Charging standard: compare the adapter’s supported standard with what your phone specifies. A matching plug alone does not confirm fast-charge compatibility.
  • Output rating: read the adapter’s output label and compare it with the phone maker’s recommendation. A higher watt rating does not guarantee a faster charge if the phone or cable does not support it.
  • Cable capability: confirm the cable supports charging at the level you need; some cables may have different charging capabilities even when the connectors fit.
03

If you want wireless charging

Confirm that your exact phone model supports wireless charging and check which standard or charger generation it works with. Also check the phone maker’s notes about cases and alignment. Wireless charging support is not universal, even within a brand’s product range.

04

What to ask before buying

Share the exact phone model, the connector you need, and (if available) the charging requirements from its official specifications. Ask whether the adapter and cable are both suitable for that model, and confirm current availability with the shop.
